In short an otolaryngologist is a doctor who specializes in the treatment of illness, disorders or injuries to the ears, nose, and throat. They are often called ENTs physicians.

You might not know that it is in fact the oldest specialty in the US.

An otolaryngologist is the physician to consult for medical or surgical procedures to ears, nose and throat, and a pediatric otolaryngologist for problems affecting children's ears, nose and throats. They can take care of afflictions to sinuses, larynx (voice box) and upper pharynx (mouth and throat). They can also be consulted in matters concerning the neck and face.

Ears
Hearing loss is a serious problem for 10% of the American population. Otolaryngology is concerned with the science of treating ear disorders, both medically and surgically if needed. Otolaryngologists treat hearing loss, ear infections, tinnitus (noises in the ear), they can also help in disfunction, caused by nerves, in these areas as well as in the face, and should be consulted when balance is a problem, as it can be related to ear functions.

Nose
More than 35 million people suffer from sinus conditions, each year. It is one of the most common nose affliction among Americans. Caring for sinuses, and nasal cavities, is one of the primary cause for seeing an otolaryngologist. They will be able to provide treatment, and relief for allergies and breathing problems. They can also provide assistance in matters of nose appearance.

Throat
Your throat is vitally important for communication, and for eating. Otolaryngologists will be able to detect diseases and disorders affecting these functions, and can not only treat the larynx but the esophagus or upper digestive tract, which can affect swallowing.

Head and Neck

The head and neck have important nerves to control sight, smell, hearing, and the face. They can be affected with infections, or trauma as well as tumors benign or cancerous, and deformities. A doctor of Otolaryngology would be the specialist to find solutions to these disorders. He/she could also perform surgery whether plastic or reconstructive.
